Yea what a happy topic!
First off, my position:
It is immoral, sickening, unjust, selfish, etc. It is never justified unless the mother's life is in danger when it is tantamount to self-defense. It is not the baby's fault if he/she is the result of rape, incest or a one-night stand.
The Declaration of Independence:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
The first unalienable Right is the Right to be alive.
The horrible, pathetic fact is that the vast majority of abortions (92-99.5%) are done as a means of birth control. So any defense of it on grounds of rape/incest/retardation is a red herring.
Common defenses:
"It's a woman's right to choose what to do with her own body."
Of course it is. But that's not the issue here. A baby is ANOTHER BODY with his/her own set of unalienable Rights. Which reminds me of something else that ticks me off: these "pro-choice" and "pro-life" labels have to go. The correct terms are pro-abortion and anti-abortion.
"It is not a person."
Calling your baby "it" is revealing of the underlying attitude. Dehumanization. If you convince yourself that a baby is not a person, it must be ok to kill it. Like stepping on a bug. Or shooting a dog...
Guess which other sickening acts were justified by dehumanization of the victim? The Holocaust and Slavery.
To the Nazis, the Jews were inferior, not the master race, not equals, subhuman. To the Slaveholder, the Black man was inferior, not a full citizen, not equals, subhuman. It is this EXACT mindset that allows evil in our world every single day. Take it to the modern day; what do Islamic Terrorists claim is the justification for the killing of innocents? They are inferior, not True Muslims, not equals, subhuman.
And I don't even want to get into the medical definitions of when a heartbeat begins, when a baby is "viable", etc. My son who has been out of the womb for 6 months now could not survive more than a day without being cared for. In fact, he is more needy NOW than he ever was in his mommy!

Huh??? Being born in America in 2007 is the single best situation, all things considered, of any IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD. Even if a child is brought into a very bad family, that does NOT doom the child to a bad life! I have heard people say that they are so thankful their mother didn't abort them...it's crushingly sad to imagine a parent would even consider such a thing. I suppose I could add more to this later, but I've said enough for now. Hopefully this will shed the light of Reason on this issue for someone.
